Texoma Tails - December 2025

One of our primary intentions at Dark Roast is to give a voice to the voiceless, and that’s exactly what we plan to do with Texoma tails.

Texoma Tails - December 2025

This is our first official “Texoma Tails” story, in which we showcase the long-term residents or pets that struggle to get the attention of adopters from around the North Texas and Southwest Oklahoma communities. This will be a monthly story in collaboration with various rescues and shelters. Of course, it only feels appropriate that our first issue of it be published in December – the time of giving and the time that many people are seeking out furry family members to share the love of the holidays with.

One of our primary intentions at Dark Roast is to give a voice to the voiceless, and that’s exactly what we plan to do with Texoma tails. The cats and dogs we highlight here have had a hard time finding loving homes, at no fault of their own. Our hope is that people will read their stories, share them, and (fingers crossed) the right person will find them and give them a home.

Each story will include a photo of the pet, how long they have been with the shelter or foster, a bit of their backstory by the staff that know them, and the contact information for the shelter or rescue they’re with. While these stories may not answer all the questions interested readers might have about a pet, they open the gateway for communication between the reader and the shelters/rescues. For any additional questions, or to nominate a pet for Texoma Tails, contact us at reanna@darkroastreport.org.

NITRO:

The first pet that was sent to us is being cared for by Stephens County Humane Society in Duncan, Oklahoma. His name is Nitro and he has been in the care of the Humane Society for 450 days. He is currently staying with a foster but is yearning for a forever family to love him.

“If you’re looking for a companion who is full of personality and also has a heart of gold, Nitro is your guy. He’s fun and playful and is guaranteed to make you laugh. His quirky smile and pretty eyes will surely bring a smile to your face. He’s completely potty trained and is a top notch cuddler. He loves affection and is ready to cozy up and snuggle at the drop of a hat. Nitro is athletic and would be a great work out and adventure partner, too! He walks well on a leash, too! He loves to get some fresh air on a nice day. One of his favorite activities is playing in the yard with the other dogs in our household. We’ve been told he is not a fit for homes with chickens and livestock, but that’s okay, he can’t have it all right?? He’s smart and eager to please, so training and learning new things come easy to him. Nitro does not require heavy correction and is quick to respond when commands are given. He can jump a fence, but we’ve had some success keeping that from being an issue. He knows the “sit” and “stay” commands and is quick to do them upon request. Smart, handsome, athletic, outdoorsy, affectionate, potty trained, eager to please, and funny, he’s a great catch!! Schedule a time to meet him and you won’t be disappointed!”

To inquire about Nitro, contact the Stephens County Humane Society at info@stephenscountyshelter.com or call them at (580)252-7387.

SCOOBY:

Scooby is an eight-month-old pitbull. She is currently under the care of the Humane Society of Lawton - Comanche County in Lawton, Oklahoma and has been with them for five months. She came to them after being dumped as a puppy. Volunteers of the Humane Society say that she has struggled to get adopted because of her breed (even with such an adorable face).

“Scooby is very energetic, super sweet, loves to cuddle kids, loves playing with other dogs and cats, and will do anything for a snack! Pitbulls are not allowed on military bases or in apartments so she is struggling to find a loving family but this girl has never met a stranger and just wants to be everyone's friend!”

Anyone that is interested in Scooby can reach out directly to her foster mom at 405.371.8281. For questions about Humane Society of Lawton adoptions, visit their Facebook page.

BRIAR ROSE:

Briar Rose was rescued and taken in by Texas Pit Crew in Wichita Falls, Texas, with her litter of puppies. While all her puppies were adopted, Briar Rose is still waiting for a loving home of her own. She has even undergone training to become her best self for her future family!

She would be best suited in a home with an active family. She’s house-trained, crate-trained, and leash-trained - though she can be distracted by wildlife. She does well with women, dog-smart kids, and even farm animals. She does need to be crated on car rides because of her excited nature. She is trained on sit and down, and is working on stay and her recall off-leash. She’s food-motivated and does best in training with a tasty incentive.

“She yearns to be an integral part of the family’s daily activities, whether it’s watching you clean, folding laundry, or barbequing in the backyard. While she enjoys relaxing and watching TV with you, she also needs her daily walk. Briar Rose is generally good with dogs, especially when introduced slowly and walked in parallel. She’s great with the foster dog, but she hasn’t had much exposure to other dogs nose-to-nose. She loves playing with the foster dog, but she hasn’t been tested with cats yet. Briar Rose’s energy level is high when she rides in cars and gets to go to Home Depot. Briar Rose has focus and excels in her training class. This well-behaved dog would thrive with more training to become an even better companion at home or if you wanted her to compete in dog events like obedience, rally, or agility. After years of being a street dog with a litter of puppies, she’s been spayed and is now ready for her next chapter. With her infectious 10,000-watt smile, she’s destined to become a beloved companion for someone special.”

Briar Rose’s adoption fee is $165. Interested parties can contact Texas Pit Crew about her via email at texaspitcrew@gmail.com.

INDIA:

India has the honor of being the only feline friend on this month’s list of pets, which speaks to just how special she is. India is a thirteen-year-old girl under the care of Miss Fannie’s Friends in Wichita Falls, Texas.

India was rescued off the streets 10 years ago. Despite her age, she is full of love and just looking for someone to give it to. While Fannie’s functions through fosters, and she is in good hands, India longs for a permanent home to live out her golden years.

“She is very sweet and loving. Loves people, affection, her cat tree, kids, and other cats.”

To learn more about India or to apply to adopt her, contact Miss Fannie’s Friends via email at missfanniesfriends@gmail.com.
