Texoma Tails - August 2026

This month, many of the shelters and rescues in Texoma participated in the annual Clear the Shelters event. We were thrilled to see so many cats and dogs go to loving homes, but there are still so many more waiting for their forever families. While most shelters do the most the can with the resources they have, the inevitable reality is that the stray crisis is too big for shelters and rescues to tackle with adoption events.

For the numbers of homeless animals and animals that are euthanized due to overcrowding to be reduced, the whole community has to step up and do something about it. Fortunately there are several options to take action. No matter what your physical state, financial state, or housing situation looks like, you can still do something to help. This includes volunteering, donating funds or items, spaying and neutering your pets, and fostering.

May this month's Texoma Tails pets serve as a reminder of all those pets that watch some cats and dogs get adopted, while they're left behind, wondering when their turn will come. If you have room in your home and heart, please consider adopting one of these precious pets.

Bowie

Stephens County Humane Society (Duncan, OK)

Bowie has been patiently waiting his turn to be someone’s best friend. Shelter staff say he’s house-trained, walks perfectly on a leash, and already knows sit and shake. They said he also loves car rides, so he's the perfect companion for someone looking for an adventure buddy. Staff did note that Bowie would do best in a home without cats because he has a tendency to fixate on them.

"This handsome guy is very treat-motivated and enjoys spending time with his people. If you’re looking for a well-mannered, fun-loving, and loyal companion, Bowie is ready to head home with you!"

Bowie's adoption fee is $60, which includes neuter, vaccines and microchip. Interested adopters can apply on the shelter's website to adopt him.

Falcor

City of Wichita Falls Animal Services (Wichita Falls, TX)

The staff at the shelter took one look at this guy and immediately thought he looked like Falcor, the luck dragon from The Never Ending Story, hence the name. He is a two year old neutered male Terrier mix with a majestic coat, a gentle soul, and a charming smile. Falcor has a remarkably row-with-the-flow personality and is happy to be someone's adventure buddy, but also just as happy being someone's couch potato companion.

"While he may not be able to fly through the clouds, he'll soar straight into your heart. Falcor is ready to make your story a happily ever after.

Meredith and Christina Grey

Fishy's Friends Rescue (Lawton, OK)

Meredith and Christina are a bonded pair, that both bring a unique personality to the dynamic. Meredith was found with Christina, abandoned on a country road. The bond between the two of them made it clear that they had been relying on each other to survive

Volunteers say that Meredith was rescued, she had a dislocated hip and quickly underwent surgery for it. This gave her a second chance at life, with her best friend helping her through the healing process. Despite what she's been through, Meredith really enjoys being around people, receiving affection, and cuddling.

"Meredith is the definition of gentle. She has a soft, submissive nature and a kind soul that melts hearts wherever she goes. While life may not have always been fair to her, she continues to greet the world with sweetness, grace, and an incredible capacity to love."

Christina is around two years old and was found with Meredith. Her past trauma left her with a lot of fear but volunteers say she's come a long way and has really warmed up to people. She's currently enrolled in a training program where she's learning manners and the basics.

"She's leaving her past behind while building confidence, polishing her manners, and learning all the skills she needs to thrive in her forever home. With her bright spirit and eagerness to learn, she's well on her way to becoming an incredible lifelong companion."

Lottie

Heart and Soul Pet Rescue (Fletcher, OK)

Lottie is a tabby Bengal mix that's just over two years old. Her foster said she has a sweet, calm, cuddly demeanor, and gets along well with other cats. She has been fully wormed and vaccinated and is ready to find the lap she'll be cuddling in the rest of her life.

"Lottie is an absolute sweetheart who purrs all day long. She is social, friendly, and loves playing with other cats of all ages. When playtime is over, her favorite spot is curled up right on your lap watching TV."

Ubu

Humane Society of Lawton - Comanche County (Lawton, OK)

Ubu is a two year old male pitbull that was found after being dumped. Volunteers said he is well mannered, loves to play with other dogs, and doesn't mind cats in the home. Ubu is a very short pittie and only weighs 40 pounds making him the perfect travel size and, as a bonus, he's does well on car rides. He is neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative, and fully vaccinated.

"Ubu hasn't met a human or a food he didnt like. His favorite time of the day is to sit on the couch with you to read or watch TV."

Huck

Texas Pit Crew (Wichita Falls, TX)

Huck's foster parent described him as a professional lap warmer and a full-time people lover. He is all things a person would want in a small dog; sweet, cuddly, and very affectionate. He is a two year old Cairn Terrier. Huck's foster said he was dumped but that you wouldn’t know it by the amount of love he has to give.

He can be a little unsure when he first enters a new environment but he warms up quickly with a little time and kindness. His foster also said he does well with other dogs and even children, but he hasn't been tested around cats yet. He does okay on a leash but needs more practice, and he doesn't know any commands. He's neutered, fully vetted, heartworm negative and is microchipped.

"Someone threw Huck away. Now he’s just looking for the person who will show him that this time, home really means forever."

Chica

Wilbarger Humane Society (Vernon, TX)

Chica is a two and a half year old Red Heeler Chihuahua mix. Staff say she is a very active girl. They said she would be a good fit for a family that likes to take walks or would want her to ride in the car with them. They noted that she tends to be very protective of her people and that she is not a fan of cats but can get along with other dogs after introductions and time to warm up them.

"Chica is nervous when you first meet her but after a few moments she is up and licking your hand. Come see if Chica is a fit for your family.

Black Betty (BB)

Altus Animal Shelter (Altus, OK)

Black Betty, BB for short, is approximately 5 years old. She was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owners due to no fault of her own. Staff say BB is great with kids, cats, dogs, and every person she has ever met. BB recently graduated from the shelter's Prison Training Program, so she has learned all sorts of new commands in the last month and a half.

Staff say she loves belly rubs so much that her trainer at the prison nicknamed her Bongo Belly instead, for how much she likes her tummy patted. They added that she is so sweet and laid back that she would be a good fit for just about any household.

"Her personality is very loving and outgoing. She would much rather get attention from her people than do anything else."

Dusk and Dawn

Miss Fannie's Friends Rescue (Wichita Falls, TX)

Dusk and Dawn are a bonded 3 month old brother and sister duo, being fostered by Dark Roast's own Seth and Reanna – and we'd be lying if we said we weren't biased! Dusk is the male and Dawn is the female. Their names speak perfectly to how different their personalities are but also how perfectly they go together. Dusk is spunky, playful, and independent. Dawn is sweet, cuddly, and needy. We compare them to Yin and Yang, because they balance each other in every way (sometimes literally).

Dusk and Dawn both have cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), which affects their balance and coordination. They can still live long, happy and healthy lives despite CH. Dusk’s CH is mild, while Dawn’s is more moderate. As they continue to grow, their mobility is improving, but CH kittens do come with some extra quirks. They can be a little messy with eating and using the litter box, so they’ll need a patient adopter who understands they may require a little extra cleanup and care.

"Don’t tell them they’re different… because they certainly don’t know it! They may be wobbly, but they are FAST and full of life! What they need in patience, they give back tenfold in love. These two don’t let anything slow them down, and they’re ready to fill a home with laughter, cuddles, and endless entertainment!"
