We've mentioned the stray crisis countless times, and we won't stop talking about as long as there are pets paying the price. Between pets being dumped, unaltered strays, and owner surrenders, shelters just can't keep up. As a result, many shelters are having to close intakes and are trying to find creative ways to boost adoptions.
If you have the room and financial means to take on a pet, we urge you to adopt from a shelter or rescue. Not only will you save a life, but you'll be surprised by how they save yours.
Unfortunately for us animal lovers, we can't adopt twenty animals, but there are other ways to help out the shelters and rescues in your area. The biggest ways to help are fostering, donating, and volunteering. Any amount of help, money, or resources you can contribute makes a big difference. If we can all come together as a community to address the issue, we might just see a change.
This month's Texoma Tails pets are putting on their cutest faces and loudest purrs in hopes of finding loving families. Some of these pets are long-term residents that have waited long enough to find where they're meant to be. Others on the list have reduced adoption fees so they may be more attainable to a broader range of families. Take a peek and see if you're new bestie catches your eye!
Mystic
Stephens County Humane Society (Duncan, OK)
Mystic is a stunning two year old tortoiseshell domestic short-hair with a gentle soul that's as beautiful as her big green eyes. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchiped and ready to supply all the lovin'! Her adoption fee is just $35.
"She is friendly and easy-going, making her the perfect companion for someone looking for a calm, loving friend."

Sable Mae
Texas Pit Crew (Wichita Falls, TX)
Sable Mae has been with the rescue for a year now and is wondering where the heck her forever family is! At this point, she's thinking they may have gotten lost, took a wrong turn, or forgot to submit their application. Her adoption fee has been reduced to $75 in hopes of finding her forever home.
She is a year old Rottweiler mix, that's fully vetted. Volunteers say she is a young, intelligent girl with energy to burn and a brain that likes to stay busy.
"Sable Mae is smart, happy, affectionate, adventurous, and absolutely full of personality. She’s the kind of girl who wants to be involved in EVERYTHING you’re doing."
Her ideal family will be able to give her plenty of exercise, adventures, enrichment, training, consistency, and—most importantly—a place where she finally belongs. She would do best with older children or a dog-savvy family. Larger, confident dogs may make great companions for her, and a secure fenced yard would give her plenty of room to play and burn off some of that Sable Mae energy!

The Baby Bottle Squad (Grayby, Carburetor, Fifa, Ralph)

The Bottle-Baby Squad are ready for adoption, and who could resist those sweet faces?! These four abandoned kittens were raised by foster volunteers and are now 8 to 10 weeks old, meaning their ready to find their forever families. According to volunteers, all four are highly socialized and completely friendly with children, cats, and dogs.
Grayby is the light gray one and is very cuddly, and loves napping under your chin. Carburetor is the petite tabby and has high-energy and a playful personality. Fifa is the black and white tuxedo who is very confident and fearless and greets visitors at the door. Ralph is the only male and is a large, confident tabby and big purr-machine.

Herbie
Wilbarger Humane Society (Vernon, TX)
Herbie is over a year old (maybe close to 2) and is a tiny little ball of energy. Staff say he is a happy little fella who loves to play all the time and is good with other dogs. They say he should also be okay with cats, since he is smaller than most of the ones at the shelter. However, he hasn't had much experience with kids that they're aware of.
"Although he acts shy to start with, his less than 6 pound body is full of personality once he gets comfortable!"

Piper
Humane Society of Lawton - Comanche County (Lawton, OK)
Piper is a year old female Chihuahua. Volunteers say she came to the rescue very traumatized and doesn't like to be touched or picked up. Piper seems to have never had human interaction and now is afraid of it so she needs a family that will give her patience to trust at her own pace.
Piper is potty trained, good with older kids that respect her boundaries, great with other dogs, and good with cats. She is looking for a home where she can be the cutest roommate ever! She just wants to play without being touched by humans and needs another dog in the home to interact with. She is very playful so another playful dog in the home is ideal.
"Fireworks don't scare her, she throws treats in the air and plays with them, and once she trusts you then she curls up in your lap when you are watching TV. She loves tucking herself into bed when she has cozy blankets to wrap around her."

Gibbles & Goose
Miss Fannie's Friends Rescue (Wichita Falls, TX)
Gibbles and Goose are a mother-daughter duo that are approximately two years old and one year old. Their foster says they’re both very friendly, love affection, and are good with kids, other cats, and dogs.
These two beautiful girls share a bond that’s impossible to miss. Gibbles is actually Goose’s mom, and despite Goose being all grown up now, the two are still inseparable. You’ll often find them curled up together, grooming each other, or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Goose is the chatty one. She loves having conversations with her people and will happily tell you all about her day. Gibbles is a professional attention seeker. One of her favorite tricks is standing up on her back legs and putting her front paws on you to politely request pets and affection. Gibbles also appears to have some Persian traits. Her eyes can be a little runny at times and need occasional wiping. Because of this, they’d ideally like an adopter who either has experience with Persians or is prepared for the possibility of future veterinary care, as Persian cats can be more prone to certain health issues.
"Their story is especially close to our hearts. Earlier this year, Gibbles underwent surgery for severe necrotic mastitis and faced a long recovery. Through it all, Goose never strayed far from her side. We’re happy to report that Gibbles has made a full recovery and is feeling great!"
Because of their close relationship, their foster would like to see them find a forever home together. They’ve been through so much side by side, and their foster knows they’ll continue to bring comfort, companionship, and endless love to each other—and to their future family. Acier
Altus Animal Shelter (Altus, OK)
Acier is a 14 week old lab mix pup and is full of life and love! She was part of a litter of 6 puppies that were found as strays, and is one of 2 that have yet to be adopted.
"Acier has a very laid back personality and is loving learning how to play with toys, but she doesn't quite have the hang of it yet."
Now through July 18, the Altus shelter is offering reduced adoption fees. While the fees are normally $75, they're currently just $20. All dog adoptions include sterilization and vaccinations. Interested adopters can learn more about Acier by visiting the shelter or calling (580) 481-2285.
