Texoma Tails - April 2026

Dark Roast Report publishes Texoma Tails because we believe our furry friends are an important part of the community whose voices also need a platform. Despite how busy we've been conducting investigations, planning our first event, and managing our first fundraising campaign, we will always make time to help pets in need. It's just one small way we can help connect animals with their forever homes.

Of all the shelters we've spoken to lately, a trend we're seeing across them all is a need for resources and adopters. Most shelters and rescues are packed right now and in need of help, volunteers, and fosters. Especially for rescues reliant on volunteers, everyone is feeling a bit overwhelmed amidst the stray crisis. Most the rescues and shelters on our list are in need of donations, helping hands, and especially fosters, so even if you're not looking to adopt at the moment, reach out to one of the shelters on this list to find out how you can help.

Mozart

Mozart is a handsome black-and-white Australian Shepherd mix with brains, beauty and a whole lot of heart. He's about 2 years old and weighs around 70  pounds. Located at Stephens County Humane Society in Duncan, OK, shelter staff say he is the kind of dog who's just waiting to be the pet someone someone can be proud of. Staff say he's dog-friendly, doesn't make a mess in his kennel, and is highly treat motivated, making him easy to train and eager to please.

"He's smart, steady and ready for a job or a family. If you're looking for a loyal, capable and good looking companion - Mozart is ready to meet you!"

Mozart's adoption fee is $60, which includes neuter, vaccines and microchip. You can apply online for Mozart at www.stephenscountyshelter.com or call 580-252-7387 to meet him.

Olaf

Olaf is a beautifully two and a half year old fluffy boy that's been with Miss Fannie's Friends Rescue in Wichita Falls, TX, for a little over a year. Volunteers say he is a sweet boy that's affectionate to his core and absolutely loves attention.

"Whether it’s pets or simply being near his people, Olaf is happiest when he’s sharing his love. He has a wonderfully easygoing personality and would make a devoted companion."

Fannie's volunteers did want to note that Olaf is FIV+, meaning he has a weakened immune system, which they believe may be why he hasn’t been adopted yet. They explained that there's a lot of misconceptions around cats with FIV and said that they can still live long, happy, healthy lives and can safely live with other cats.

Those that are interested in meeting Olaf can reach out at missfanniesfriends@gmail.com.

Tilly

Tilly is a high energy, sweet-tempered, young dog that needs a person who can match her energy. Tilly is kennel trained, enjoys going for walks and does well with mentally stimulating tasks. Tilly is under the care of Fishy's Friends Rescue in Lawton, OK and is currently in need of a foster home, if not an adopter. Fosters are what allow Fishy's to function and continue to help other dogs in need.

"She just needs a calm, balanced home that can help her burn energy and give her space to decompress. Tilly's been through a lot but she does well with structure, patience, and routine."

To find out more about Tilly or to give her a foster or forever home, call 877-863-4749.

Kurt

Kurt is a big, dreamy red fluffball under the care of Humane Society of Lawton - Comanche County in Lawton, OK. Kurt is nine months old, up-to-date on shots and feline leukemia negative. Volunteers refer to him as a "long-haired sweetie" and say he's litter box trained, has the fluffiest coat, giant paws, and the cutest smile.

"He’s a total snuggle bug who loves being held and purring away in your arms like a warm teddy bear. Such a soft, gentle boy—and he’s looking for his forever home!"

Volunteers added that Kurt gets along with other cats but they're unsure how he would do with dogs. Those interested in adopting Kurt can call 580-591-3142.

Allie

Allie's not as judgmental as her face in the photo suggests. In fact, staff at Wilbarger Humane Society in Vernon, TX, describe her as a "little ball of happiness." She is a six and a half year old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. Staff say she still has lots of spunk and energy for her age.

"She likes to play but mostly, she likes to be near her person."

Staff said she would do well with other dogs or someone who would stay at home with her so she is not lonely. They also mentioned she does take a little time to warm up to some men but she is devoted once she makes a connection with them. Allie has served as an emotional support animal for her previous owner, so staff said with time she could serve that role for her new family as well. She has also lived with a cat, so she is suitable for most home situations.

To meet Allie, contact the shelter at 940-552-5373.

Saoirse

Saoirse is almost a year old and is a female German Shepherd but with a small build, only weighing 45 lbs. Saoirse was returned to Texas Pit Crew in Wichita Falls, TX, after an incident with a small dog in her previous adoptive home. Volunteers said due to this, she cannot live with small dogs or cats and will do best in a home with dogs her size or larger. Additionally, she would do best in a home with older kids or dog-savvy kids and she does require slow introductions to new people. Volunteers said she's a smart girl that's fully house trained and crate trained. She gets along well with dogs her size or bigger, but needs slow, careful introductions to new people. They said she has a big, intimidating bark, which is typical for her breed, but she warms up quickly once she feels safe.

"She is incredibly intelligent, eager to please, and forms strong, loyal bonds with her people very quickly. During training, she lets you know when she’s uncomfortable or being pushed too hard, but she recovers easily and is always willing to try again with a new approach."

Volunteers of Texas Pit Crew said she had major surgery to rebuild her hip after being hit by a car and she takes Dasuquin daily for joint support and will need to continue this supplement for the rest of her life. They also said training is especially important for Saoirse right now while she's young. Those at Texas Pit Crew require her to go to an experienced German Shepherd home that understands the breed and is committed to continuing her training.

She is fully vetted and her adoption fee of $300 will include six one-on-one training sessions with the professional trainer she and her foster have been working with. Any active, experienced GSD owners who think Saoirse could be the perfect match for their home can fill out an application at

Bunni

Bunni is a sweet and playful five month old female puppy located at Wichita Falls Animal Services Shelter. She is up to date on my vaccines and has been wormed. She's an energetic, happy, well-behaved girl who loves being out in public and exploring new places. She's a true lover girl, as she gets along great with other dogs and is especially good with kids. She simply loves making new friends of all ages wherever she goes.

"Whether it’s going for walks, hanging out at home, or just snuggling up for some belly rubs, I’m always up for an adventure or a good nap. I’m learning my manners and doing really well with my training."

Her adoption fee is $40. Interested adopters can meet Bunni at the City of Wichita Falls Animal Services or can inquire about her by calling 940-761-8894.

Shadow

Last but certainly not least is Shadow, a lovable black cat born on June 12, 2025. Shadow holds a special place in our hearts, as Dark Roast's Reanna used to foster Shadow when he was a tiny kitten. Shadow had gone to a family but was unfortunately returned to Heart and Soul Pet Rescue Inc. in Fletcher, OK, when their older cat disapproved. Shadow is up-to-date on vetting and is the perfect balance of playful and calm.

"He enjoys being a spunky playmate, but also a companion who adores snuggling and napping beside his person."

Shadow is a sweet cat that brings the perfect balance of a young heart and an old soul to any room, he just needs a family that appreciates that. Interested adopters can apply for adoption through Pet Finder or can reach out through Heart and Soul Facebook page.
