We at Dark Roast Report believe community is the answer to most problems, and that includes the stray crisis. With the Texoma area being predominately rural, there aren't enough resources to help every animal in need. As a result, shelters are over capacity and a devastating number of animals are euthanized.

This is where community comes into play. The only way the stray crisis can be addressed is if everyone in the Texoma area plays their part. That means spaying and neutering pets, fostering and adopting from shelters and rescues and then, donating and volunteering for those organizations. This month, we're not just highlighting adoptable pets that have waited too long for their homes, we're also creating a call to action to provide the featured rescues and shelters with the resources they need.

Additionally, we want to formally introduce Le Chateau Pet Resort as our sponsor for Texoma Tails. They fund this initiative because they believe in providing a platform for pets to find their furever families, and we're so grateful they have faith in this mission.

Kasha

Geronimo Animal Shelter (Geronimo, OK)

Kasha has been at the shelter for approximately 2 months. Shelter staff say they don't understand why she hasn’t been adopted because she is such a happy, well-behaved dog. She is approximately 3-4 years old and is vaccinated and spayed.

"She loves other dogs and cats. She does well with kids and loves to run around and play."

Those that are interested in meeting Kasha and seeing why staff are so surprised she hasn't been adopted can stop by the shelter or reach out to them through Facebook or at Geronimo City Hall.

Currently, the shelter is in need of several donations to continue to provide the best possible care to the pets at their facility. Staff say they are always in need of canned dog food, Purina one dry dog food, dog treats, collars, and leashes. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter during business hours.

Taylor

Humane Society of Wichita County (Wichita Falls, TX)

Taylor is a 4 year old Border Collie mix. Taylor recently participated in the Day of Play at the Le Chateau Pet Resort - Wichita Falls location. Staff say she doesn’t need an action-packed home, but rather prefers companionship and cuddles. Staff also shared that she is dog selective and did not find any furry friends that met her standards at Day of Play. That said, they think she may do better with smaller dogs. Staff believe Taylor would make a great companion for someone that worked from home, but she's content just being a couch warmer or door greeter to welcome her person home after a long day.

"If you’re looking for a lovely little shadow who is just happy to be near her people, look no further! Taylor LOVES people, and nothing makes her smile more than spending time by your side." 

Those that are interested in meeting Taylor can visit her at the Humane Society shelter.

Although Texoma Gives recently concluded, the shelter can always use monetary donations to help cover the costs of vetting and providing food.

Missy

Heart and Soul Pet Rescue (Fletcher, OK)

Missy was born in April 2025. Her foster say she's the perfect mix of calm, cozy, and playful. Her favorite things to do are nap in her hammock, watch birds from the window, and play hide-and-seek under the blankets. Missy is fully spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and litter-box trained.

"Best of all? Missy gets along wonderfully with other cats and absolutely loves dogs! She's the ultimate friend to ALL pets!"

Heart and Soul can use donations of canned or dry cat food, cat toys, or pine pellet litter.

Tilly Grace

Fishy's Friends Rescue (Lawton, OK)

Tilly Grace is an adorable cross-eyed pup with a heart as big as her personality. She is around two years old and weighs 48 pounds. She's already been fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She also recently graduated from a professional board-and-train program, where she polished her manners, learned boundaries, and proved what a smart, eager student she is.

Rescue volunteers say Tilly is the perfect blend of adventure and affection. She loves to play, explore, and stay active, but she's just as happy curling up for cuddles after a day of fun. She does well with kids, and other dogs but volunteers aren't sure how she'd do with cats.

"This fun-loving girl thrives when she has a job to do and absolutely loves learning new things. Silly, spirited, and always ready for her next challenge, Tilly is looking for a family that will continue to help her learn, laugh, and love."

Tilly's adoption fee is $300 and covers the cost of her training and vetting. Interested adopters can apply for her through the rescue's website.

Fishy's Friends is in need of fosters and has no choice but to turn dogs away when they don't have a home to place them in.

Morticia and Elvira

Miss Fannie's Friends Rescue (Wichita Falls, TX)

Morticia and Elvira are a pair of spunky sisters. While it's not required that they be adopted together, rescue volunteers say anyone that adopted them together wouldn't regret it because it's so entertaining when they play together. Volunteers say they have a balanced interest in play time and cuddling. Their greatest weaknesses are empty laps and toys – they simply can't resist!

They’ve been with the rescue for three months and, shockingly, no one has inquired about them or applied for them. As a result, their adoption fees have been reduced to $80 each.

"They came to us super shy and have made a complete one-eighty and are very social and loving now. Come for the spooky names – stay for the lap cuddles and toy obsession."

The main donations the rescue is currently in need of are kitten wet and dry food. However, they said they’ll accept just about any form of cat food, treats, or toys. They are also deeply in need of fosters and people willing to help with their TNR program. There are several cats they can't accept without fosters.

Danali

Texas Pit Crew (Wichita Falls, TX)

Danali is 7 months old and has spent almost her entire life in rescue. Volunteers say her siblings have all been adopted, but somehow this sweet girl keeps getting overlooked and they can't understand why. Who could possibly resist that precious face?

"She’s house and crate trained, loves kids, dogs, cats, toys, treats and cuddles! She’s playful, high-energy, and would LOVE a home with a yard to run in. After playtime, she’s a total couch potato and professional pillow thief."

Danali's adoption fee is $165, which covers her vetting. Interested adopters ready to finally give Danali her turn can reach out to the rescue through their website or through their Facebook page.

Like Fishy's Friends, Texas Pit Crew is completely reliant on fosters to be able to help more dogs and could use more people with big hearts and open homes.

Squeaks

Stephens County Humane Society (Duncan, OK)

Squeaks is a three year old pittbull mix that shelter staff say has an undeniably sweet personality. Squeaks originally came from animal control in February so staff don't know her history, other than that she is very dog selective. She already knows “sit,” is highly treat motivated, and walks nicely on a leash, making her a joy to spend time with.

"Squeaks would do best as the only pet in the home, where she can soak up all the love and attention she deserves. And honestly…who needs more than one amazing dog? Come meet Squeaks today—she’s ready to be your one and only!"

Anyone interested in pouring all their love into one lucky girl can stop by the shelter to meet Squeaks.

The Stephens County Humane Society is most in need of volunteer dog walkers. They have several dogs that would benefit from having a long walk or one on one time with a human every single day. Durable dog chews are also something that they're always in need of, as they soothe the dogs during the night.

Ace

Altus Animal Shelter (Altus, OK)

Ace has been at the shelter since July. Staff believe he's a Husky and German Shepherd mix. He's likely somewhere between 8 and 10 years old and was a surrender due to no fault of his own. He is housebroken, has been friendly with other dogs, though staff noted that very young children do seem to make him a little uncomfortable so he would be better suited in a household with older children.

"He has gorgeous eyes and despite his age still has plenty of spunk left in him. He's well mannered."

Those that are interested in getting lost in those gorgeous eyes in person can stop by to meet Ace at the shelter.

Like any shelter, volunteers are always useful for various tasks around the shelter.

Allie

Wilbarger Humane Society (Vernon, TX)

Allie is a 7 year old Chiweenie that has been at the shelter for almost a year now. She was originally a service animal for a young woman but when her housing situation changed she had to leave Allie behind.

She is a bit on the chunky side and when she first came in she was very men selective which led to her being passed over several times. She has since warmed up to everyone and has become more comfortable around all people.

"Allie loves attention and would be good with people who like to spend a lot of time with their animals. She does well being kenneled despite what she will tell you. Mostly this little one just loves being loved."

The shelter has compiled a wish-list of things they're ALWAYS in need of. They also have an Amazon wish list and a Chewy wish list for supporters who utilize those platforms. As for volunteers, their greatest needs would be on surgery days to help with recovery of dogs and cats, and during adoption events. Dutton

Wichita Falls Animal Services (Wichita Falls, TX)

Dutton is a three year old Great Pyrenees with a whole lot of fluff and an even bigger heart. Dutton first arrived at the shelter almost a month ago after being picked up by Animal Control Officers. It didn't take long for Dutton to get adopted with a face like that. Unfortunately, Dutton was returned to the shelter shortly after his adoption when he was diagnosed with heartworm disease.

Heartworm is treatable but it takes time and requires veterinary care, medication, and - perhaps the hardest part for a big boy like Dutton—keeping activity restricted while his body recovers. However, a heartworm diagnosis doesn't mean Dutton can't go on to enjoy a wonderful life. Staff say they're trying to find someone willing to look past the diagnosis and see the wonderful dog standing in front of them.

"Dutton appreciates the simple pleasures in life: treats, scratches, good company, and a nice brushing session. He's the kind of guy who doesn't need to be the center of attention - he's happy just being nearby, soaking up some affection and looking handsome while doing it."
